Is Enshrouded Save Editor Safe?
Short answer: yes for your privacy, with one caveat you control. This page answers is Enshrouded save editor safe from both angles — what happens to your file, and what can still go wrong inside it.
Status: the editor is in beta. Files are parsed locally; the only upload is an anonymized sample that you explicitly opt into after a parse failure, and samples are deleted after 30 days.
What the editor does with your file
The editor runs in your browser. When you open a .ksd, it is read with the browser's own file API and processed on your machine — no upload, no account, and no server that sees the contents. You can verify that yourself: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the editor keeps working.
There is one deliberate exception. If a save fails to parse, a collapsed panel offers to send an anonymized copy of the file so the format can be supported. It only sends after you expand the panel, tick an explicit consent box, and press Send — the details, including retention, are on the privacy page.
It is also an unofficial tool, built as a fan project. It has no connection to and no endorsement from Keen Games, and it never touches the game itself — only the save files you hand it. The question "is Enshrouded save editor safe" therefore splits cleanly: privacy is handled by the browser, file integrity by the checksum and your backup.
The real risks
"Safe for your privacy" is not the same as "nothing can go wrong". Three things actually break Enshrouded saves:
- A wrong checksum. Every block in a .ksd carries a checksum, and the game refuses to load a file whose checksums do not match its contents. The editor recomputes them after every change; a file edited by a tool that does not will be rejected by Enshrouded.
- The game overwriting your edit. Enshrouded writes its save when it exits. Edit while the game is running and closing the game afterwards can replace your edited file with its own.
- Steam Cloud restoring an old copy. If cloud sync is on, an older cloud version can come back over your edited file. Pause sync for Enshrouded while you edit.
All three have the same answer: work on a copy, with the game closed.
The 30-second backup
Open the folder with your character saves (both paths are in the save location guide), copy the .ksd you plan to edit, and paste it somewhere outside the save folder — a folder named ksd-backups on your desktop is fine. That copy is your undo. If an edit ever goes wrong, move it back and the character is exactly as it was.
Multiplayer: one more thing
An edited character is your own save file, but other people's worlds are not yours to rebalance. If you bring an edited character into a friend's world, tell the host first. And if a character ever feels ruined, starting a fresh one is cheaper than arguing about it.
